Melancholy Poem by Bryan Sefton

Melancholy

Rating: 5.0

I stand on the cold steel edge of day
As the wind bears this years ashes away
I observe a tree gesture angrily
And toss its last remaining leaf at me
As if to say 'take it and be done
Take it and the year is gone'
I watch the leaf as it lost its grip
Then the leaf take an hesitant step
Move fast towards me then run away
Turn in a circle of alarm and dismay
Then stand befuddled and becalmed
As if it realised I would do no harm
The summer is gone for the two of us
The days are gone when the full sap thrust
For the challenge, the drive and the bearing load
Now the path of life is a dusty road
One cannot retrace where one has been
Looking back on the green and pleasant scene
I stand on the cold steel edge of day
As my lifes ashes blow away
