Memories Poem by Donna McCord

Memories

Pleasant memories are what I hold dear
And I gather more of them year after year
Sometimes when I hear a song from my past
I’m reminded that life is going too fast

I close my eyes and my mind replays scenes
Of things that I once did and a much younger me
Memories are more precious as time goes by
And they’re all kept alive in my minds eye.

The birth of a child makes me see in my mind
How I used to rock and sing to mine
The way they cooed as I held them close
The sweet baby smell they left in my clothes

I can still hear that little munchkin voice say
“Hey Mommy, can you come out and play? ’
That dirty little hand that reached for me
When I ran out to bandage her little skinned knee

The smell of home and the girls playing dolls
The pictures of family that hung on my walls
The dust that I always complained about
And the smell of clothes I washed and hung out

The patter of rain on an old tin roof
Was a sedative for me when sleep was aloof
And the weight and smell of quilts on the bed
Even the feather pillow that cradled my head

Memories, like mini movies play in my head
And sometimes they start up when I lay down in bed
They give me comfort and they make me smile
As I drift off to dream and turn back the miles.
