Mennonites Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Mennonites

Mennonites

It happened on the bus
-simply came up cause
-to speak with men who
-uniformed like robots

Their jeans had suspenders
-and their hats, special
-women wore headcovers

Knew not much of them
-the belief nor their faith

Among them was "Abram"
-I said: "Hi" he replied
-then became my guide to
-learn about Mennonites

He gave me an address
-Paraguay, far away
-and a man named Abram
-I sought him and did find

Became guest for days and
-attended the church and
-ate with them and drank
-in my hand camera to snap,
-several and many photographs

Have two shirts and the pants
-have quilt, work of hands
-and the books on them and
-memories in large, mass

This is to my hosts who
-were nice; so very good
-though we are different
-parallels cannot merge
-will never become same
-but always shall respect
-whatever in their mind
-however they live life
