Mere Lake Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Mere Lake

Mere lake
Yet
In its waters
The moon
Mirrors
Its strange
Nocturnal
Face.

The form is not exact but this poem is spiritually a haiku, because it takes something small and seemingly unconnected from the rest of nature and shows it is really significanct and connected to a larger reality which it foreshadows and which it therefore participates in. This is what a haiku does, which is more important than limiting it to 17-syllables. Where does the Moon truly exists? In the night sky, or in the water? What is more real: that dead rock in earth orbit, or the luminous reflection in the crystalline water of the pool?
