Missing Girl Poem by B.M Lewis

Missing Girl

4 years old

She wakes up to a strange noise.
She looks up into the face of a man.
She screams and in comes her parents;
She sobs her story
Her dad pulls her into his arms,
“There are no such things as monsters.”
Her mom gives her a glass of water,
“It was just a dream.”
So, she goes back to sleep.

8 years old

She’s on her bed doing homework;
She hears footstep down the hall.
She walks to the door to take a peek;
A man stands at the end
She hides under her blanket
Until her dad finds her
“There is no one there, ” he says.
He pulls her into his arms,
And he rocks her to sleep.

13 years old

She’s practicing soccer after school
She kicks a winning goal
She hears a faint clapping
So, she scans the empty bleachers
She lays eyes on a handsome man dressed in black
He blends in with the shadows
She doesn’t run or hide; she doesn’t scream or cry.
She simply walks over to him
He reaches out a hand and she takes it

3 years later

Her mom was holding her picture;
Her dad was holding a beer.
The telephone rang loud and shrill
Her dad stumbles to pick it up
“We found her, ” comes the voice on the other end.
“It’s not good; it’s strange. I can’t find a cause.
We have no idea how she died.”
Her parents rush over to the scene of the crime.

10 minutes later

Her parents arrive in hopes for better news.
The police’s faces surprise them.
“We turned our backs for a minute or two, ” They said.
“When we turned back again, she was gone.”
They investigated the area and found nothing.
Her parents learned a few valuable lessons:
There are such things as monsters
It was always more than “just a dream”
Something is always waiting in the shadows
And she was never seen again.
