Langston Hughes likens the beauty of African Americans to the night, the stars, and the sun, in the three couplets. Although he was half- white, half- negro himself, Hughes identified himself completely as African American.
Hughes is right about the beauty of African Americans. A few examples: Barack and Michelle Obama; the singers Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, and Kelly Rowland; Gail Devers, an Olympic gold medallist in the 100 metres sprint and 110 metres hurdles; the poets June Jordan and Rita Dove.
Langston Hughes himself had wavy black hair, a moustache, a soulful gaze, and he wore immaculate suits in photographs. He had goodlooks too.
