Mortality Poem by Phanice Wamukota

Mortality

Rating: 5.0

Through my mother I came on earth
To join the world and follow the path
Playing with neighboring kids with my ball
Knowing forever we'll remain as all
The mention of death never made me flinch
Or run to my mother her arm to clinch
Always thought we will remain forever
Being strong to make it through whatever

While still naive both parents die
In big funny boxes they are made to lie
At first I'm told they'll soon be back
So run to the gate responding to each bark
As I grow I take some time to contemplate
Then tears of understanding drop into my plate
It's then that I learn they are gone for good
To the only place they'll need no food

Then my mind wanders away from home
I get to realize to beings it's the norm
Young and old do go the same way
Impelling me strongly the matter to weigh
Voluntarily or not your way it has to come
Some will wail but down they'll calm
Even drunkards know that death is real
So on sobering up they prepare the will

Kings and Queens do succumb to it
Rich or poor alike must be hit
Only that dates are chosen by fate
On deciding your own its life you hate
Whoever decided that this is to happen,
Might never have intended your hopes to dampen
A vignette or not I have to submit
After all on earth we might never meet.
