Mrs Pearson. Poem by Bryan Sefton

Mrs Pearson.

Mrs Pearson doesn't know the cause of war
Why man should bring on man such devastation
Or bring a certain species to the brink of extinction
She can only shake her head and exclaim with sad regret
'Dear Lord, what a sorry situation'

Not does she know why people have to starve
Why little children swell from malnutrition
She can only gaze in horror at the cruelty of life
As their hopeless eyes gaze from the television
And her tears flow unashamed for the dying, sick and lame
Crying 'Lord! What a sorry situation

And it is too, you people without conscience
And it is too, you hoarders of the world
And it is too, you bloody politicians
And you who turned away
And you who shrugged it off
And you who said 'well? '
And you who said 'hell'
And it is too

But Mrs Pearson doesn't know the cause of famine
Why a country can't afford to feed its own
She can only sit and wonder if she watches it alone
Or if every human heart has turned to stone
