Musings - Light On The Hill Poem by Paul Warren

Musings - Light On The Hill

When Adelaide was first settled down
And hill farmers needed a trip into town
They hitched up the buggy at an early time
And went by track in the hills they did climb

After a day doing business and errands run
They went back in the buggy for the return begun
As it got darker they were guided by a bonfire
Lit by the homestead safely home to aspire

It seems a small thing to us thinking about a pioneer
At that time when there was darkness to fear
So you needed an aiming point to be made
So the bonfire was needed for a safety grade

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
A story I heard about 19th Century farmers in the Adelaide hills. It was so uncivilized when hills farmers came into Adelaide for the day, the homestead had to light a bonfire to guide them home in the dark.
