My Childhood Memories Poem by Owen Cullimore

My Childhood Memories

My Childhood Memories

It's funny how times have changed
When I think back to my childhood days
In particular the type of things we watched on television
All the funny characters and their funny little ways
There was Bill and Ben the flowerpot Men
They had their funny way of talking
Boobolep this and Bobleop that
And a very funny way of walking
Then there was Andy Pandy, a funny little boy
Who wore a Blue and White Romper suit and a funny Hat
And his two friends he used to play with, Teddy and Looby Loo
And an odd assortment of animals including a Big White Cat
But the best for me as I remember is the old Village places
Like Camberwick Green and Chigley with Trumpton a old market place of re-known
Names that bring back many memories of enjoyable times
Watching the character's come to life on the screen generally acting the clown
In Trumpton it was Captain Flack and his firemen crew Pugh-Pugh -Barney Magrew
With Cuthbert - Dibble and Grubb making up the rest of his motley crew
Their weekly adventures created a few laughs and enjoyment
You always wondered next week what would they get up to
In Camberwick Green there were plenty of characters to keep you riveted to the screen
None better than the old Windy Miller who ran Colley's Mill and liked a lunchtime visit to the Pub
His tipples sometimes caused him mishap having had one too many
Not a good Idea not eating whilst drinking he should have had some grub
Many a time he would be caught sleeping it off leaning against the bottom of the windmill
Oblivious to all and sundry that might pass by in the afternoon Sun
But we still loved to watch him each day he was on Just to see
Exactly what would be today's bit of fun
There was also the Fort with Captain Snort and Sergeant Grunt
And six soldiers to help keep order in the area always on the alert
In their brightly colored uniforms they did look a sight
Always on duty always on show
A sentry used to keep watch right into the night
In Chigley life was a bit different due to the presence of Whickstead Hall
Lord Belborough the owner and his Butler Mr Brackett were well know in the Town
Owned the old Railway that used to run to neighboring villages a few times a week
And Belborough and BrackettUsed to Drive Bessie the Steam Train that used to run up and down
Right passed the Bisquit Factory situated on the edge of Chigley
And always stopped at Farthing Pottery to collect items being sent
To customers everywhere around the country
On a daily basis so everyone was content
It's funny how things remain in your mind from such a age ago
But I know I loved watching these programes on every week
Even as a teenager they used to still raise a smile
Just as they did when they were at their peak
