My Golden Retriever Poem by Kondwani Simwaba

My Golden Retriever

My Golden Retriever
I've always loved dogs, but I had taken a hiatus from owning them you see.
But on this auspicious of days, a beautiful retriever came kocking at my door and I was never one to let a damsel in distress so in a haste, I resumed ownership of it in hopes of giving it a new home but unbeknownst to me at the time this dog belonged to someone else and a day would come when I would have to loosen my clasp and as a good sport I would have to return it to it's natural owner but I reckon I got a little avaricious after drowning in that beautiful abyss called it's eyes.
I got a dog from someone! We played fetch, chase and bark and this was heaven for us but a time so strange that not even the Doctor would foresee came and in the end this game was no longer such a marvel seeing as this dog would some day miss it's habitat and my attachments would matter less but let me stress that as a good owner I tried to make it feel happy and secure but even I know there were times even I couldn't count that I fell short.
I put a collar on it's neck and with it I stamped my name on it as a reminder that I was the true owner but who was I kidding because a problem came in when I paid for another Maltese, in my mind I was trying to provide with it some company but I Know now how bad a decision that was and ever since then this dog has hitherto become anorexic; everyday I have tried feeding it but it spits the food back at my face and force feeding would only either chock it or make it throw up.
I wonder! Do I still try feeding it or cut off from its neck the collar bearing my name so this retriver could go back to its golden home, I am a beliver that doing so would make it grow even more stronger but what about me?
