My Limericks - 1 Poem by Sanat Kumar Banerjee

My Limericks - 1

শুনতে পেলাম পাটনা গিয়ে
সর্ষে বেটে বাটনা দিয়ে
লঙ্কা কাঁচা দিয়ে তাতে
সুতোয় বেঁধে কলার পাতে
ইলিশ খাবে গরম ভাতে, কোন রকম চাট না নিয়ে।

(I heard in a place called Patna - that you should eat Hilsa fish along with hot rice without any sauce or pickles, after cooking it with mustard and green chilly kept inside banana leaf tied with thread.)

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I love Limericks, short funny, absurd so called nonsense poems as written by Edward Lear and in India Sukumar Roy in Bengali language. Inspired by them I tried to write some Limericks and this one is the first one. I do also like Haiku.

Is the English part a translation or an explanation of the other part? I don't understand it, but welcome to Poem Hunter!

Thanks Kim for going thru my Limerick - You can take the English part as a translation. In Bengal (India) Hilsa is the most popular fish and cooking with mustard is a popular recipe. All my limericks are written in Bengali and hope you know and will appreciate that there are some very local terms, cultures, rituals, jokes etc in one race or language that are difficult for others to follow and all cannot be suitable translated. However I shall try to provide english translations as far as possible for my future postings but I fear that may not reflect the true essence of the limericks.
