My Love Poem by UMESH KUMAR SINGH

My Love

A boy in my vicinity
Had ended his life.
Came before a running train.
It was 1976.
I enquired about the cause.
My peers said: 'Love is the accused.'
I did not know then;
What love was like.
The wise peers advised:
'You are too young to know.'
On my young mind,
That left a scar indelible.
I had heard about love stories.
Scarcely could I believe,
Love to be so cruel;
That it could such a huge price demand-
The price of one's life.
This left me alarmed.
I swore never to fall in love.
As years rolled by,
I forgot my vow.
I also somewhere read:
'Better to have loved and lost;
Than never to have loved at all.'
I fell in love with a dame.
Her beauty is ineffable,
And her charm great.
No apsaras can compete with her.
I praise her beauty in all my songs.
She follows me wherever I go.
And never calls for any price of love.
To me all paeans of beauty,
Seem fired by her splendour.
She is the inspiration
Of all love songs,
That I hear in the world.
In all rhymes of sadness and gloom,
Of frustration and of separation in love,
I see her picture perfect.
Do not ask me
Her name or clime,
Because she is mine.
Mine and mine alone.
None can rob her of
Her beauty or her love.
She is timeless and eternal,
Beyond death and diseases' pale.
'Is it possible for a dame
To have such a virtue
As you admire? '
You all shall scream,
In one voice.
Friends, let me disclose,
She lives safe in my ivory tower.
I did not seek my love in mortal vest,
But a love formless and fathomless,
That none could sway.
I ask you all:
'Can death lay
Her icy hands on her?
Can time cause wrinkles on her face?
Or can green-eyed monster
Ever dis-possess her?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The suicide by a young boy of my neighbourhood (when I was 15 in the year 1976) due to his parents refusal to approve his inter-caste affair with a girl left me shocked for a long time.
