My Oak Poem by Kara Johnstad

My Oak

You are my oak
You are my poem
You are my willow

You give me roots
You give me words
You give me shelter

You nourish me
You old oak tree
Giving me shade

Your leaves wrap themselves around me
And whisper
I am here for you
In all the seasons
Trace the veins on me...
Now trace the veins on your arms
We are one

Touch my bark,
It too has moles and spots
Run your fingers up me,
Hold me,
Now look at your skin
It is beautiful
You are beauty pure

Do you see my branches?
Climb towards me
In storms I sway
Learn from me
I protect you
Grab the first branch and sit real still
Little bird is singing
She has built her self a nest
High up in the top branch
There she can see far
There she can see the world
There she is singing
I gave her a poem last night...
yes, go to her
She is happy.
Soon she will take wing...go to her
She sings today in gratiude.
