My Only Life Ambition Poem by Francis Duggan

My Only Life Ambition

Like every life form in this World humans are born to die
And the stories of an afterlife may even be a lie
For not one I know who has passed away to me has come back to tell
Of another life in another World of a heaven or of a hell
If this is the only life we'll live what a failure I have been
And though I've written reams and reams of stuff on the things I've done and seen
Since in the eyes of big brother success I have not known
Or as one would say the seeds of greatness in life I have not sown
I must be seen as a non achiever a weed can never become a rose
But not everyone can be a success such is life one must suppose
And does it matter anyway since death it is our lot
If your name will live for centuries or you will be forgot
And my only ambition in life is to live for as long as I can
And in my sleep die peacefully as a worn out old man.
