My Reply - Poem by Ben Russell

the blood is spilling and my head is spinning
the whistle means it's time to run
my home is a hole in the ground
my neighbours' diseased, did i tell u they bite

and i apoligize, for the state of my reply
soaked in blood and tears, inlaid with gravest fears
id give my right leg if i had one left
to tell you im ok...but lying won't make the pain go away

my heroes came today, they fell down the trenches wall
they're not my heroes anymore
my hands tremble with a cold anger, i want my revenge
but i only have one leg to stand on i cant climb anymore

and i apoligize, for the state of my reply
soaked in blood and tears, inlaid with gravest fears
the radios been blown to hell my dear
and so the truth becomes clear, i will dissapear

the whistle blew for me one last time
i hauled my ass up on one leg
but fate denied my final fight
it snapped beneath me like a peg, not dead, hostage instead

and i apoligize, for the state of my reply
soaked in blood and tears, inlaid with gravest fears
you sent me a poem they sent you my head,
with a note i did not write,
dear wife i killed myself with my own knife
