My War Poem by chris schwartz

My War

Walked on the ground
The confederates lost
But, Damn, they were
Fighting for something.
Watched him breathe
Through a tube
For weeks, seemed like years
Turns out
I was fighting
For nothing.
Seems we all wage
Our battles
Seems we all
Draw our guns
Until our last breath
Reminds us we're nothing
In my travels
Stopped at streetlights
Sixteenth century graves
Mean that
They are someone.
And I still wonder
Still mortify
At what I will be.
I still wander,
Petrified
At what will
Become of me.

Inspired by a cemetery that we stopped at because of a red light. Crazy how time can stand still and the mind still wanders at the speed of light
