Mystery Word 'uless'

Full well knowing
everyone knows Count Cavour*,
Wells* wonders
in Nineteen One,
at the end of The First Men In The Moon,
what on earth his hero's last word* might mean.
He suggests 'useless',
but he's doing nothing more
than telling you
to remember to leave out the u
when you spell Cavor*.
