New Year Poem by Lee McGregor

New Year

A time for reflection a pondering day
The life of a man just passed away,
Sombre subdued a heavy warm sky
Unfolding new year whatever implied.

Bleary fatigued a late night before
Dancing and music, singing outdoors,
Feasting and drinking and talk filled the night
Auld Lang Syne as the clock struck midnight.

A feeling of loss for the season now passed
Lights still linger glow in the dark,
So little time, so much in between
Twelve months?
There's a toll as time pervades all.

No option for now but to face what's ahead
Sway with the sadness confront lurking dread,
Can't cling to the moment it fades away swift,
Departure for all, may courage persist.

'Happy New Year', the cry of the night,
Wishes well meaning to shield from the fight
That ensues from the quest to withstand the plight
Of the battle inside and all else in one's sight.

'Happy New Year', do they know what they say?
Words won't support when we're caught in the fray,
The contest the challenge befalls each and all,
Prepare to be stretched to suffer some more.

There's no ever after this land where we live
Happiness joy a part of the gift,
The rest is to test to break and to mould
Nowhere to hide immersed in this world.

What do we wish the new year will bring,
A calm constant sameness
Improvement in things?
A total whitewash of what's gone before,
A cleansing, rebirthing,
New pathways, new shores.

What is the sensation some magic will come
From well wishing words
Robert's poem is sung?
So much to assume those words heaped in hope
Will arm and protect
Through this one just begun.

The cynic is strong and the scars they run deep
Hope has been hammered
Belief becomes weak,
Dreams have been dashed
Time wearies the will,
But perhaps with new year
A chance for renewal?

Abandon the past and step through the door
Trust once again be sincere and feel sure,
Embrace the connection with those all around
Dance and get drunk and swirl to the sound!

Surrender the doubt it's a Happy New Year!
Resolutions are strong, celebrate and cheer!
For this one will be different
Of that you are clear,
Good things will come to us all!

Now the night has passed by
And we dwell in first day,
What is the feeling with all pared away?
Sitting with self in a delicate state,
Abiding alone what remains of the joy?

Perhaps this is not how it feels for you,
Maybe discovered a love fresh and true,
A night full of meaning with family and friends
Will deepen, unfold as the year moves ahead.

Perhaps plans have been made
The doing now known,
At last turned the corner
Achievable goals,
It's all up ahead you can see a path clear,
Let go the big picture
'Have a good one you hear! '

Maybe you've been in some really dark place,
Battled with demons pain thrust in your face,
A wrench to the core cruel year gone before
Survived and endured, shut tight that heavy door.

Good luck to you all I can honestly now say
Having rambled along in my plain pensive way,
Find purpose and meaning in something you do,
Hold hope in your heart
May that help us all through.

Salutations once more may the months travel well
Into encounter out of your shell,
I wish you the best
May you strive for your goal,
The year bring wisdom and strengthen your soul....
