Newly Born Poem by Jeffrey Mitchell

Newly Born

As soon as I came out
I wanted to stand on all fours,
Wobbly at first, being new on the scene.
Am I strong enough to run, jump and play well with the others I see?
Already I see that my spots are different from them,
Am I unique?
Is it ok to be different from them?
Wow look at all those who came before me,
How beautiful, the way they stand with proudness and antlers as trophies.
Some are sharpening their antlers by dueling with one another.
Dad will I have antlers like that? Will I stand out, amongst so many that came before me?
Edgar, Maya, Pablo, Emily, Shaun and more.
Wow what an elite group to look up too.
Will I ever graze in a field where they been?
Wait son before you get ahead of your newly formed antlers,
Watch out for predators, who wish to devour you,
And the head lights which moves real fast,
Be watchful, for hunters while trying to cross over to the other side, where the fields are greener to graze on.

But do not worry because you were made in my image.
So seek out your fields to play in,
Run with the wind at your back,
Jump and leap as high as you can.
And when you get thirsty drink from my brooks,
Lay and rest in my meadows while sleep comes upon you.

Psalm 42: 1
“As the deer panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”
