Nix - Poem by Marie Cris Ponsaran

in the shadows of despair
i prosper
in the brink of darkness
i survive

what pushes me on
is not the promise of sunlight
it is not the hope
of achieving freedom

what motivates me
is the pain i feel
each time i breathe
each time i open my eyes

i struggle in life
and feel the need for pain
for utter desolation
to wrap me in its embrace

i do not live
for the smiles or laughter
but i exist
with every bitter tear that falls

happiness is but a fleeting emotion
one so essential as to survive
and yet we bear the burden
of being alive

i am but a mere speck
in this world of ashes
and i shall disappear
with the passage of time
