Not For My Beauty Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Not For My Beauty

Love me.
Not for my beauty.
Not because I'm wise.
Not for my I.Q.
Not for my size.

All of that is temporary.
All of that is relative.
All of that is secondary
To what I really am.

I will not sing to you of my singularity.
I will not remind you of my fire.
I will not brand you with my lipstick.
I will not bind you in your desire.

I know I am one woman
As unique as a sheep.
As reflective as a lake.
As pressing as time on an island.

Love me because in conversation you are heard.
In your absence you are remembered.
In your presence you are felt.
In your bed you are fulfilled.

Then love me like I love you
And make both of us whole.
