Nothing Poem by Pauline McVicar

Nothing

Open your eyes. It’s cold.
Look down at your feet,
Where are they going to?
Look around, look at the street,
Where are the people? Is it only you?

What was that? It was nothing.
Still walking, you can feel me!
But there’s no-one else around
You want to turn around. You won’t see me.
It’s your own feet you hear making sounds.

Pull your coat up, your ears are cold.
You can feel my eyes, looking.
Lift your shoulders, try to hide.
It won’t work though, no use trying.
Everywhere you go I’m by your side.

A quicker step, faster breathes.
Doesn’t work, you can’t lose me.
You turn around; I see fear in you’re eyes.
You’re afraid because you can’t see me,
I’m not hiding; I’m here, not in disguise.

I can’t show myself to you,
I’m here I’m easy to see.
Knowing I’m here is not enough.
Only you can release me,
But for you it will be tough.

Im not invisible by choice you know,
I don’t linger here for fun.
I know everything about you, you see.
You don’t believe me but Im the only one.
I know this because you are me!
