Nothing Going On Here Poem by Grant House

Nothing Going On Here

18 kind of beautiful minutes of my life
Driving home through Ventura
North on the 101 toward Santa Barbara
Into the sunset around 7 in the evening
On April 12,2019

Nothing special

Just a part of a typical evening on the way home from a long day
Really
Nothing happens here
Except, of course, the majestic miracle of the Earth turning on its axis

The center of our solar system, our one and only sun 92.96 million miles from here, soaking this tiny part of the vast and infinitely beautiful Milky Way Galaxy with radiant light and warmth

Invisible radio waves being converted into electrical mechanical sound waves kinesthetically stimulating our ears with what we interpret as culturally relevant music that has us tapping our toes and humming along in a language we may or may not understand

A hybrid electric and internal combustion system embedded in an enclosed vehicle made in Japan of metal and plastic flying along on four pneumatic steel belted radial tires at upwards of 100 feet per second less than a foot off several feet thick pavement designed and laid down by hundreds if not thousands of workers and engineers over many years of planning and construction

And all this digitally recorded and saved for months then provided through a network of wireless, fibre optic, satellite, and cell tower distribution passing through server farms and global switches to your personal device all the way and directly into your unique cognitive space

While I operate the car
Millions of mustard plants blossom and bees spread pollen on the seaside hills
The tides change

Well, you get the idea

Nothing much going on here
Nothing to see
Business as usual
Eighteen minutes of a same-day 436 mile trip to a business conference in San Diego and back that began in my driveway at 5: 30 am
A 14 hour and 41 minute round trip
This being nearly the last leg

Thank you for sharing a bit of my life's journey
Now a tiny piece of yours
An everyday miracle suitable for sharing
Enjoy
