Ode To Lagos Poem by Heaven Kalu

Ode To Lagos

Welcome to Lagos city...
A place of superfluous attention
Where circumstances are opportunities
And If you don't know where you're going
You pay for every ignorance with you
No hard feelings, it's all for survival
Infact if you doubt me, ask your conductor

A geographic location atween two
Unfortunate twins from separate mothers
The Mainland and the Island
Inseparable by the outstretched bridges
Mainland like Israelites, mulish & macho
Island like Sodom, excessive & easygoing

On the island of affluence
The rich folks assume they pray
In their expensive worship centres
But God resides on the Mainland
Where folks try to pray their way to riches
Even with their "village people" in view

Aircraft hum are seldomly heard on island
But busy posh helicopters noise around
Yet all the airports live on Mainland
With untarred roads and scary potholes
Big enough to send a foreign investor into
An untimely coma while stucked in traffic.
