Ol' Marfa's Light Poem by Alexander Beebe

Ol' Marfa's Light

Ol’ Marfa was a blue tic hound,
no owner did she claim.
No one knows where she came from
or who gave her the name.

Every morning as the sun rose,
ol’ Marfa made her rounds,
down the side walks, up the alleys,
by every shop in town.

Mr. Jones who was the barber
always knew the time, he’d see
ol’ Marfa pass his door, take
pause and look inside.

She’d head on down to Ms. Eileen
who owned the bakery shop.
She’d greet ol’ Marfa with a treat,
then smile and set her watch.

All the children at the schoolhouse
new when recess came, they’d find
ol’ Marfa on the playground ready to
play chase.

Every evening as the sun set
the town folk would take pause,
to listen to ol’ Marfa singing
to the moon and stars.

No one was neglected in this small
West Texas town, from greetings
every morning from their heart filled
blue tic hound.

And then one night she disappeared
never to be found. But locals say
that Marfa’s glow can be seen just south of
town.

Many years have come and gone since
that fateful night. But looking south,
toward the hills, you can still see Marfa’s Light.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Marfa Texas is home to the Marfa Lights. An unexplained light show phenomenon that can be seen on most clear nights south east of town. This was my own unscientific explanation.
