Old Joe Only Has The Memories Poem by Francis Duggan

Old Joe Only Has The Memories

It has been awhile since he was in his physical prime
Some fifty years this is going way back in time
Old Joe only has the memories of his years of renown
When he was the best athlete in the town
At twenty nine he qualified for the Olympics but he could not compete
As he was hit by a car when crossing the street
A tragic accident that confined him to life in a wheelchair
On some people life can be very unfair
In his seventy eight year without a partner or children or wife
He is one who has been unlucky in life
As nice a person as one could wish to meet
Quite humble in his ways and free of conceit
The town's best athlete some five decades ago
But luck it has not been at all kind to Joe.
