In the olde days
you could hold a feire on a fealh,
a fair on a fallow field.
A field that was full was a feld.
Pretty soon
fealh became alh,
then al;
feld became eld,
then el;
and feire
became eir
then er as in air.
With the new wording all went well:
one could have an er on an al,
but never an er on an el.
