On Adrian's Illness Poem by Francis Duggan

On Adrian's Illness

He's still only in his prime years but of late he's not been well
And life for him not easy he's already been through hell
A giant in his stockings and yet a gentleman
He takes on life's great battle and does the best he can.

He may look big and powerful but he is quiet and shy
And a gentle giant is Adrian he would not harm a fly
And so much to like about him in him there's so much good
And why some good people suffer I've never understood?

That he had been out of sorts of late I had not realized
And at the news of his illness I felt sad and surprised
But Adrian is a strong young man perhaps as strong as two
And he will beat his illness his physical strength will see him through.

Cancer is cruel and merciless and even the strongest it doesn't avoid
And it leaves behind it a trail of heartbreak and many young lives have destroyed
Still many have survived it and lived on to be old and gray
And who knows an anti cancer drug may not be that far away.

And it goes without saying that Adrian will be okay
For strong young men like him don't easily die they live to be old and gray
He's known more than his share of ups and downs and life for some can be hell
And it's been sad to hear that this gentle giant of late has not been well.
