On Advice Poem by Francis Duggan

On Advice

Perhaps she said you should give penning of verse away
You've not known success and you've had your better day
You've written heaps more than enough of stuff
Perhaps 'tis time you've thought I've done enough
You've penned for years without any success
And who might I ask are you trying to impress?
Those strangers in the bigger World out there
Without reward your soul with them you share
Though writing of verse can never be a crime
You should find better ways to spend your time
Than penning of stuff that will never make the grade
As you know poets are born and not made
It did hurt me the truth in her advice
For our addictions we all pay the price.
