On Hearing A Rufous Whistler During A Thundershower Poem by Francis Duggan

On Hearing A Rufous Whistler During A Thundershower

The rumblings of thunder in the overcast sky
And cows stand close to cypress to shelter and keep dry
And lightening quickly follow each heavy thunder blast
And wind is rising to a gale and rain is falling fast.

And through the peals of thunder the voice of bird i hear
The little rufous whistler is singing somewhere near
He always sings when noise is rife and the sound the thunder make
Cause song that sleep within his heart to suddenly awake.

So many more before me have asked the question why
The rufous whistler whistles when thunder's in the sky?
And at sound of big machinery he burst forth into song
Perhaps he love the sound of noise and with it sing along.

The rumblings of thunder near close of Summer day
And rufous whistler singing on tree not far away
And wind is rising to a gale and rain is falling fast
And lightening quickly follow each heavy thunder blast.
