On Hindi Day/ Hindi Diwas Par (Two Differently Written Poems In Englsih And Hindi As For The Medium)

On Hindi Day

We never liked those
Khaddardhari, khadi-clad
People for show
Who used to teach us
Try to speak in Hindi
As a purist
Without using English words,
But we with a base of our own,
With a grounding in English
In Arnold, Richards, Reeves,
Eliot, Trilling, Tillyard
Whose theories we read
In Hindi too
Wanting to submit thesis
On Milton and Sur,
Willing to translate Kamayani
Never, never liked them,
Those, those fellows
Be they teachers of schools or colleges,
Some just with bogus certificates from vidyapeeths,
Vernacular academies
Got posted as teachers in middle, primary
And high schools,
Never, never liked, liked them
And some claiming to be head masters
With Sahityalankara, Sahityaratna
Teaching us to glorify Hindi
With linguistic chauvinism
We never, never liked,
Liked them, those, those fellows.

Hindi Diwas Par

Ky mei andar yaa sakat hun,
Mashashay?
Tumhe hindi shikhani hai.
Hindiwalla bano,
Hum koi angrez nahi.
Hindi teacher boltei thei,
Sir mat kahana,
Mahashay kaho
Jo mujhe hargish pasand nahi thi.

Mujhe sir nahi kahana,
Mahashay, mahoday kahana,
May I come in? nahi,
Kya mai andar yaa shakata hun?
Wah sahityalankar yaa bhushan pass bechara!

Mujhei sir nahi kahana,
May I come in? kahakar mat anumati lena
Kya mai andar yaa shakata hun, mahodaya
Kahakar class mei yaana.

Sahityalankar, bhushan pass hindi teacher
Kaha kartei thei, shikhatei thei,
Kaddharddhari.

Jo humko pasand nahi thi,
Lagata thaa ki wei english nahi janatei hongei,
Englsih se eisi dushmani kyo?

Dusri baat ki hum log comparative lit ke pathak
Sur aur Milton ka study karnaa chahatei thei,
Kamayani ko angrezxi mei padhanei ko sochatei thei,
Par unki soch jo purani.
