On The Very First Day Poem by Mohammad Younus

On The Very First Day

On the very first day,
you were laid
in your mother's cradle.
Imagine a child born
without a father—
she gazes into your infant eyes,
and joy shines from her face,
as she thanks her own being
for giving forth such a wondrous,
precious gift of divine grace.

From child to adult,
and adult to cherished friend,
you become to your mother.
All the memories in her heart
are eternal, they never die.

You may possess a stony heart,
never shedding tears
for being distant from your mother,
yet still, you call to her
in wordless zikr, with pride—
the days of tender love,
life's water given without cost.
Though your mother may seem
absent from this Earth,
she lives still—
you are her image here.
She is your essence,
and she cannot die.

You are a living star,
gazing up into the sky.
All the light you scatter
is your mother's light,
for primordial light flows forever,
never fading in any mirror.
The ancient memory of mother
is deep within your core,
as fathomless as the sea.
Mother loves you always,
and always remembers you.
Mother, the eternal name of God,
embraces her children with grace.
