On Valentine's Day Poem by Berna Lovrek

On Valentine's Day

Never pierce my heart again like that! Have mercy on me.

I begged you not to make me imagine
You - with floating life in your arms.
You - sharing buoyancy and joy with another woman.
Dancing and laughing and bathing in the eyes of prettiness.
All ease, all dancing, all bursting with life.
You - denying me the same full, flowing, dancing life
That you give to that smiling prettiness in your arms.

I am that woman of means, dressed in rags, begging for pleasure...
I am that woman of means, cast out and lifeless, begging for love...

How cruel of you! After having seen my agony,
You did not have the mercy to plan in secrecy,
But made me listen to the coming joys of dancing with your love
While I was walking by your side.
Me - the one who begged so long for letting me share
Your delicious flowing, dancing life
So freely and joyously offered to your love and kin.

Have mercy on me. Never pierce my heart again like that!
