Once A Poet Poem by Deluke Muwanigwa

Once A Poet

Once A Poet

Once a poet always a poet
I was once a poet
Something sinister happened to my psyche
I found myself regressing from the boundaries of poesy
struggling to stitch a few words together
struggling to make sense
struggling to achieve any form of prosody
The demon sitting on my right shoulder
showing me a way without a way
far far away from words of civility
detractors sitting on my left shoulder
working in cahoots with the horned one
the tailed one whose enmity to progress is openly professed
I was led away
Led astray
down the path of least adversity but little reward
the path of many adventures ending in calamity
my soul detached from my spirit
my body from my mind
as if in psychedelic hypnosis
obsessed and possessed
and just when i felt like giving up
a little voice said to me
'You were once a poet! '
I was once a poet
and
Once a poet always a poet
