One Deborah Too Many Poem by Kingsley Egbukole

One Deborah Too Many

Rating: 5.0

When the sacredness of life is desecrated
And the supremacy of blood becomes nothingness
At the hands of perverts and urchins
Who see themselves as defenders of a faith
The society loses its savour of sanity

When we fight for a God we do not know
And destroy cities and altars created in peace
Killing innocent souls He loves so dear
We commit atrocities He abhors greatly

Deborah was a victim of a failed state
Where corrupt leaders have poisoned peoples mind
Applying the instructions of religion and tribe maximally
To severe the bond of love irreversibly

The blood of Deborah Samuel Yakubu cries in the spirit realm
While men deceive themselves in empty condemnation
Many other Deborahs will still pay the price
Like past Deborahs before this Deborah
The chain continues on and on and on
In a corrupt society with no conscience.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem was written in 2022 as a result of the barbaric stoning and burning to death of Miss Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a Christian and a second year student of a tertiary institution accused of blaspheming against Prophet Muhammad. There have been many victims of this disdainful act and the perpetrators were never brought to book. Many more of these incidences will still occur and the people involved will go scot-free

'altars', not 'alters' I think..an easy-to-make 'mistake'! ! I suggest 'people's minds', not 'peoples mind'.

I read your Poet's Notes, but have not finished the poem. I can't tell if you 'want' 'to' or 'too' in the title. : )

I GAVE FIVE (5) stars *****, though, to me, it LOOKS like a poem, but SOUNDS like a Letter To The Editor (of a newspaper) , a political speech, OR a Christian preacher's sermon.

Kingsley, I doubt you are calling all members of the Muslim 'faith' 'a corrupt society with no conscience', as I DO NOT SAY 'all black people are rioters', when some 'blacks' cause mayhem in volatile moments the USA.

OOPS! ...You, I'm sure, 'want' SEVER, not SEVERE in stanza 3. Both ARE words. And, In stanza 1: I like the alliterative sound of: 'savour/savor of sanity', but i don't know if savor/savour is the best word to use here.
