Our Kings Are The Thieves Poem by Babajide Aina

Our Kings Are The Thieves

Rating: 5.0

In our land, no surprise, only to the outsiders
Although we don't know what to belief again
May be our patriarch story of honesty pays
Or of the leaders of our time whose successes can only be celebrated in our village
Our neighbors never envy us again unlike when they respect our forefathers
Our excuse there excuse are the same but they fight for the common good
Only that, ours know the way to their mouth only

Life is short; wealth is vanity, but still
Our kings have forgotten the day when they will become images
If you pass through our land, poverty has become a curse,
a curse only caused by our kings, our families have escaped even to our neighbors' compound
only to find that, no place as home as our labour punishing us for the kings' robbery

Can we break our pact? Not that we love to, but our destinies are stolen
Labourer has no living wages but the kings have their entitlements
Graduate has no job, but still accuse of incompetency
Normal life is a misery in our land especially where
The breadwinner has become bread eater

Do we have prostitute in the land? Yes
Where are our basic amenities?
The Kings have taken our commonwealth and our trust is broken
In our land no surprise as our kings are the thieves.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem was informed by the corrupt nature of the ruling elites in my country of birth Nigeria.A very endowered country with both human and natural resources in abundance but stil the nature of lives is paradox to the very blessing and endowment God bestowed on our country. official are not only corrupt but corruption is made official and many are deprived of opportunies making poverty a natural tendency and where the kings are continue to be richers and the citizen poorer.

The poem reflects the despicable situation created by the leaders and politicians who are serving their own interests rather than serving their people. You have rightly said 'Where are our basic amenities? .... kings are continue to be richers and the citizen poorer'. Thanks. I quote: The Kings have taken our commonwealth and our trust is broken Where are our basic amenities? The Kings have taken our commonwealth and our trust is broken
