Our Soul Train Brother Don Is Gone Poem by Hebert Logerie

Our Soul Train Brother Don Is Gone

It is utterly sad and deeply painful for this brother
To pull down the final curtain in that fashion.
Brother Don was indeed an incredible icon.
I never saw him getting down, but he was a rocker,
A savvy businessman and an entertainer
Par excellence. In the nineteen seventies,
My siblings and I used to be pleased
To wait, to watch the soul train. No passenger
Was on board, however the boogie dancers
Were dressed to kill, for the Saturday's show;
It was like a mini-carnival, they were shaking their booties
In unison. It was exciting to tease
Ourselves by trying to follow
Them, to fly like robin flies,
To flip-flop and jump up, up to the skies,
Like superman, like some Olympic athletes.
Since then, it has been cool to be black and beautiful.
Everything must come to an end; one must cross the t’s
And dot the i’s. The past is always wonderful.
One has to move, today this soul brother has moved on
Too soon and untimely. He regrettably
Left like others who had lost the passion,
The courage, the hutzpah and the envy
To struggle, to strive and to linger on
Until the final call of the Almighty.
It is sad and un-cool to depart in that fashion.
This time, brother Don was the sole passenger on the train,
Which will never, never return; the soul is gone,
Leaving many hearts broken, but the legacy lives on.
“And as always in parting, we can now wish him: love, peace and soul! ”
To paraphrase Don Cornelius. May God have mercy on his soul!
