Over The Counter Poem by Lacie Hebert

Over The Counter

You seemed so harmless at first glance,
A casual touch, a fleeting chance.
No warning signs, no flashing lights,
No hint of endless sleepless nights.
The strongest poisons often hide
Behind the things we trust inside.
A gentle smile, a warm embrace,
A familiar and inviting face.
You slipped beneath my careful skin,
And made yourself at home within.
Until your absence hurt much worse
Than any chapter of the curse.
But healing came the way it does,
In tiny steps instead of floods.
A day without you. Then a week.
A stronger voice. A steadier heartbeat.
And now your memory barely stirs,
Like old perfume upon a shirt.
A scent that lingers for a while,
Then disappears another mile.
