Owlish Serendipity

As far as I knew
it wasn't taken for game,
that specific bird
to whose name was added f
for the generic,
and whose name
was squeezed into 'knedge'
to honor its mien.

I googled the marinade,
and it says here*:
the Gaelic for 'knife'
is 'sgian'.
