Paddy Leary Poem by Francis Duggan

Paddy Leary

Paddy Leary was a nice hard working fellow a gentleman in his own quiet way
With a wife and a big family to provide for he had to work hard for his take home pay
He was known as a very good truck driver perhaps one of the best in Millstreet Town
And he knew the roads that wound around Duhallow those mountain roads he often drove up and down.

So easy going he never did much talking he only spoke when he had something to say
He enjoyed a few stouts with his mates at the weekends the one who made a new friend every day
But with or without drink he seemed the same Paddy he was never known to be boisterous and loud
he always had a cool head on his shoulders he did not noise on with the noisy crowd.

An elder citizen of Murphy's Terrace perhaps in years he was in his fourth score
In St Mary's the cemetery in Millstreet his remains will lay at rest forever more
He will be sadly missed from Murphy's Terrace though of him good memories we will recall
He had his one appointment with the reaper the reaper who claims the life of one and all.

An easy going quietly spoken fellow of him it can truly be said
That when he had a few stouts at the weekend it never did go to his head
He always seemed happy and smiling and of worries he did seem carefree
And sad for to think that in Millstreet he is one we'll never more see.
