Places Poem by Jon Yttri

Places

South America is not men in white suits and string bowties;
Women in hoop skirts; fried chicken and moon pies.
The Netherlands and the Philippines are not families.
Nor is Oman is guy who isn't manly.
Budapest is not an oriental version of the Spanish fly.
Nor is Cape Town where the birthplace of Superman does lie.
The "Athens of the South" is Nashville, Tennessee
But not because country music is all Greek to me.
Pensacola, Florida; and I don't mean to joke,
Is not where they make the soda that competes with Coke.
Is Casper, Wyoming a ghost town?
The Piccadilly Circus is where you find a clown.
The Mississippi is the "father of waters, " so they say.
The why isn't it "Mister Sippi, " anyway?
If "Mississippi" is the proper name,
Then "mother of waters" ought to be the claim.
Want to rob a bank in Scotland?
Try the bonnie River Clyde.
Jack Benny's manservant aside.
Rochester, New York is not the home of Butler U.
Nor is Buffalo, New York where the Wild West is true.
"We Are Marching" may not play in Peoria.
Nor do nuts, raisins, mayonnaise, celery, apples
Come from Waldorf, Astoria.
