COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Hi, Daniel First, I appreciate your How To comments on using Slant Rhyme - Your directions were clear and concise, and I definitely want to experiment with it. This could add a dimension of sound to my poems which they presently lack. Second, I accessed POEM FIELDS immediately after reading your message, but I need some guidance in reading it. You divided it into sections. Does each section represent a single painting? Are the nouns and adjectives in each list representative of the painter's thoughts or the viewer's thoughts? On my first encounter with the poem, I feel unable to maneuver through it without some insight into its Point of View. Rothko once said when he saw someone crying in front of one of his paintings, that viewer was having the same experience he had in painting it. This is a puzzling statement, because his Color Fields seem to transcend rather than provoke emotional reactions. To me they seem beyond what Yeats memorably called All that man is, /All mere complexities, /The fury and the mire of human veins. Well, I want to get closer to your poem - give me an opening.

Sorry it's been so long. Rothko transcends emotion because he transcends color. I was attempting to do the same with concepts, and demonstrate their flux.
