Poetry Poem by Lesiba Mphahlele

Poetry

Simple complexities, complex simplicities,
That's what poetry-for me-poetry is.
Cool wierd stuff, boring fun stuff
Is why definitions of poetry are tough.
Things that should never be said being uttered,
Hidden tattoos and taboos that make life hard.
Making ugly beautiful and the ugly side of beauty,
That is about to say the poets' duty.
Can someone say I'm wrong? Can someone say I'm right?
Can you contrast between black and white without saying 'black' or 'white'?
Can you write about the stars and the prison bars,
The mystery of confined peace and the misery of tragic wars?
Beg to differ and hide your views,
Prove to us you have no poetic shoes!
