Poets In Politics Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

Poets In Politics

Rating: 5.0

Something sets me to ponder hard—
Does poetry pump up politics?
Or politics trumps up poetics?
I've seen some that see them as bard,
Some rhymesters are and little more
That dreams of seas whilst still at shore.

Take this one, now out-of-job minister,
Palming out a book of puerile rhymes,
A school hand may much better dish stir,
But thinks poet he's ahead of times,
And claimed that he meditated
Thru poems and garnished his grade.

Here's one more known for some valour,
Reciting times in gilded glamour,
Whilst captive audience clapped his fame,
There's one that writes verses of some value,
Reflecting in his chair's borrowed hue,
But to his credit he'd some name.

Technology now a pen-pusher aids,
A matter of pressing a few keys,
And lines come to life in much ease,
And coloured stones jostle with jades
To pass off as gems of varied shades,
A wordsmith is no Wordsworth, please.

Pray, I'm no Plato poets to hate,
Yet, politicians I do lowly rate.
And one thing I feel fairly sure:
Poetry often seem to lure
Politicians, but scarce is richer made,
Nor his politics earn a better grade.

Does poetry pump up politics? Or politics trumps up poetics? Interesting question, I think a poet is galvanized into action by what they are impassioned by, if they feel their is something wrong or want to right something they do it by writing. A political poet is one fueled by a desire to try and make change, to influence and create dialogue. Words may not stop the world from spinning but they can make a person stop and have their head spinet. A stimulating work!

I meant it to be a satire on those politicians who take advantage of their commanding position to capture readership (though no good poets) . Today emphasis is more on likes, foot-falls, hits, and digital footprints. Your point is very valid, and thanks for calling my labour a stimulating work.
