Portal Chasing Poem by Nika McGuin

Portal Chasing

Rating: 2.8

I stay up late
gazing through a portal
catching glimpses of life
on the other side
of the world

Their lives are so different
from mine, and yet
so similar, as I watch them
their world seems
like a dream to me
I have to remind myself
that it is just as mundane,
just as dreary, as my world

Still, I want to dance into
this 'dream world'
mundial DJ, I implore thee
play a song long,
slow, and beautiful

Because soon, Ill return home
where closed-minded citizens
who know nothing
of this realm await

I feel sorry for them,
they haven't danced about
twirling and spinning
through mysterious portals -
they don't even have interest

Living in neat, tight little boxes
they are content
that is the saddest part of all

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Inspired by my interest in different cultures. The whole portal idea though came from my obsession with Korean Dramas. I watch them on my computer and thus my computer screen became a sort of portal(that I stay up late looking at lol) . By the way this poem is pretty old, its from when I first started writing again. I've been clearing out some older poems.

I like this poem because it suggests so many other poems as yet unwritten - by you, by me, by dozens of other poets at PH. It's a wonderful mix of things near and far, of things old and new. The ancient Korean drama captured by the modern PC; the young woman in America and the actors in Korea. But the deep theme of this poem is your ability to self-renew yourself through cultural experiences. I like your word portal because it is a visual image. I am fond of THRESHOLD and both words lead to a similar expansion of our consciousnesses.
