Practising Prepositions With Traffic Lights Poem by C Richard Miles

Practising Prepositions With Traffic Lights

Traffic light, Traffic light, red, at the top:
Men upon motorbikes screech to a stop.

Traffic light turning to amber below:
Now it is time to get ready to go.

Traffic light underneath, green as a toad:
Now they can zoom on the wide-open road.

Traffic light amber above says; “Slow down! ”
To drivers in cars speeding all through the town.

Traffic light up at the top turns to red
People, not vehicles, cross over instead.

Traffic light amber beneath, once again:
Drivers are ready and counting to ten:

Traffic light, green, at the bottom, at last:
Now all the buses can go by so fast.

Traffic light changes to amber from green
Not yet to red but half way in between.

Traffic light, red, like a furious boss,
Lets the pedestrians safely across.

Traffic light red but with amber beside
Say to the cyclists, “Get ready to ride.”

Traffic light, underneath, turning to green
Vans, rushing past you, depart from the scene.

Traffic light amber for just one more time:
Soon will the lorries stop by the white line?

Traffic light, Traffic light, red, at the top:
Cars wait beside you and there we shall stop.
