Progressive Black Mind Poem by Tyrone Gayle

Progressive Black Mind

Rating: 5.0

Wah gwaan? I'm at college and every semester, I'm gonna make the Dean's List,
I'm not trying to be a failure plus my folks can't afford the D's list,
What do I look like? Solidifying a stereotype by living by 'these fists'.

I'm gonna rise like the morning sun! My beautiful African skin doesn't mean I'm a statistic,
I don't desire to be a playa, a thug or a swag dude; that's not why I got my citizenship!

Yeah, I'm not from here,
In my first two words, I made it clear,
I'm from the West Indies,
And with my hard work and God's help, I will be a splendid black man, indeed.

And from reading many of your poems which reflect your values and views, I would say you are already well on your way to becoming that splendid and SUCCESSFUL black man! You are truly an inspiration for others!

An anthem of sorts, sang many times. This focal point is on what not to be, as a base of what to strive to be, or why to even strive. Many have made it on the path your determination is driving you, millions more haven't. I guess that's the difference between you & them. Good luck, may Obama never say you could've been his son. Be smart but land in Africa, by the time AfCom is done stoking fists, it will be the Next Frontier, & you'll be positioned just right to bank on it. To end brutally, not that my sarcasm isn't meant to be anyways, I hear the echo of the mantra: Kill the Indian, save the man.
