Quarters Of Life Poem by ER Bron Chiong, RSW

Quarters Of Life

Everybody on earth
has the four quarters of life—
first, being born, grow up to adulthood
second, building one's career
and starting a family in a new home
third, professionalism or a career change
fourth, comes retirement or re-invent
unless you died much younger
in any of these stages in life

Whatever stage you are in right now
think of what is best for you
to accomplish in this brief life
remember, life is really that short
so better make the most of it
what matter is--how you spent it
and the legacy you left behind
will remind others of who you are

It seems like eons ago
when I was young, timid but vibrant
as I embarked my new hopes and dreams
it catches me by surprise
that the years passed fast
and my youth is gone

But here I am now
retired and getting grey
like the older folks of long ago
I never thought I will become--
unprepared for all the pains and loss of strength
At least I know, I'm in this stage
never sure when will this last
it will be faster than you think

I never regret the things I've done
things I am happy I fulfilled in my lifetime
Don't ever forget this vital truth—
Life is so short, even if you reach a hundred and one
today is the time to accomplish what you want
and say the things you want them to remember
this is your fantastic gift to those whom you love
the best legacy you can leave for them to follow
