Rainy Night Poem by PRAVEEN KUMAR English Poems

Rainy Night

I went out at night a rainy day,
Sky was dark with roaring clouds,
Air was thick with freezing winds,
Rain was dropping like no day later,
And I was caught in splashing water
In unceasing tall walls from all sides.

I was wet in the blinding night,
No soul could I feel miles anywhere
But for flashes of dazzling lights
Falling from heaven in merciless sweeps
That lighted my path and country around
In desolate ruins of the ferocious rain.

Firm I was to probe the rain's secrets,
And walked in rain, wet and drenched,
Shuddering in chill in unfolding thrill;
Miles I walked, jumped water-lots,
Found my path through thunderous lights
In frightful joy never found anywhere.

Walked through, unfettered anyway,
For miles hours like birds in the sky,
Found trees toppled and poles crashed
And water up rising beneath my feet,
To ankle and thigh in the fierce flood,
Uncertain I was, whether walk or retract.

No places around to rest and wait,
No time to think to do what next,
I noticed chit of light in a far hole
Of a ruined hut on the countryside;
Helpless I went there, knocked door
And found an old lady opening door.

She allowed me in in kindness all over,
No question who I was, why I had come,
And settled me somewhere all in smile;
Long shadows from her tiny old lamp
In that little hut with its dim light
Bewitched me in that rainy night.

Thunders, dazzling lights rolled outside,
Blizzards outside shook countryside;
Yet she was serene inside her hut
Like an islet in Pacific Ocean,
Unruffled, undisturbed, in control,
She brought something to feed me there.

I asked, how in that frightful night
With winds and floods playing havoc,
She lived all alone in confidence there
Without a help for life-saving cover;
She spread bright smile from her face
And said, she herself was nature's child.

Nature brought her out, and later fed,
Nature her settled in the countryside;
Nature was her mother, knew how to care,
And in nature's lap, she felt most secure;
Nature brought her there, would take some day,
She said beaming light from her deep heart.

I went out to probe and find rain's secrets,
But found deep secrets of a contented soul;
Know your basics and know your roots,
All you are, mere nature's resolves;
Rely on mother, who knows what to do,
Time and place, and she does always right.
